| Whistler is the name of the town at the base of world famous Canadian ski mountains Whistler and Blackcomb. While originally settled by a few hardy pioneers in about 1911, the ski mountain Whistler opened for its first gondola rides to great skiing in 1966. Word got out that Whistler had the snow and the terrain and in 1980 what had been the dump was turned into a beautiful European style pedestrian village with lifts to both the established Whistler and the newly opened Blackcomb Mountain.
Whistler/Blackcomb has gained international recognition over the last fifteen years with some of the best skiing and boarding, mountain biking and hiking in the world. With peak elevations of over 2100 meters (or 7400 feet above ski level), skiing is available almost year around because of the glacier on Blackcomb Mountain. Due to its amazing facilities and terrain, this resort was just chosen as a partner with Vancouver, British Columbia as the Official site of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Winter Games.
Located about a two-hour drive from Vancouver, British Columbia, in the Coastal Mountain Ranges, this town of over 10,000 local residents is nestled in the heart of some of the best ski country in the world. With an average snowfall of over 30 feet per ski season, this compact resort hosts over 2 million visitors every year. World-class amenities such as restaurants, spas, shops, world class golf courses and activities combine with these world-class mountains to offer an amazing vacation experience to skiers, riders and their family members from all over the world. You are as likely to listen to German or Japanese on the ski lifts and in the restaurants, as you are to hear English.
